About Naoko Smith

I have a PhD and have done extensive further research on different aspects of identity politics.

I also write and review erotica.

I think about sex a lot <snerk>. I think sexuality is fundamental to society and our identity. When I talk about 'sexuality', I mean more than just who we like to go to bed with. I mean family and the politics of family - which is called kinship - and the politics of who we may be allowed to imagine having sex with. I believe these are central to who we are.

My first degree is in Social Anthropology, a discipline for which kinship is a core subject of study. For about a decade I lived and loved and thought and argued about feminism, race politics and power in what are sometimes called the queer communities. I went to do a PhD and was influenced by the thinking of Michel Foucault, author of The History of Sexuality

Now I live in a nice suburban area, bringing up my daughter (Piglet) in a heteronormative family setup. We have a lot of fun but sometimes it does feel like I am the only one in Stepford with a sense of humour.

This blog is about what lies behind the conundrums we face as we negotiate our lives and loves. So much happens when two (or more) people get together in an intimate way, not all of it is good. I'm a humanist. I think we usually mean well. Men and women (annoyingly society forces us to choose between one or the other) are brought up in twisted ways, no wonder the good intentions sometimes have unexpected counter-productive effects. Here I'll untangle some of society's twistings and turns, using the concepts of other philosophers and writers.

These are my other blogs:
Feminist Erotica is where I review erotic stories which are good fun and good for you. It's mainly aimed at a younger audience and came out of my research finding that Sex and Relationships Education is rubbish and you can learn a lot more just cruising the internet.
Naoko Smith's blog is where I have a bit of a larf sometimes and write practical advice on how to put water in the wishy-washy wiper bottle for your car.
Erotica Writers' Bloc is where I post thoughts on the art and craft of writing filthy disgusting seckshual porn about *whisper* sex

You can also find me on About Me, I list my latest stories there when they come out on the different platforms I publish to.
